Living Life According to Our Values

Personal values are essential for a happy life. They pull together all the things you believe are vital to the way you live.

You can ultimately use your personal values to decide what you prioritise. And, often, they are (whether or not you realise) how you measure whether life is going the way you wanted.

Life feels typically pretty positive when what you're doing match up to your values. However, when life is not in line with your personal values, you may start to feel unsure and unhappy.

All of this is precisely why it is vital to identify your values.

I recently decided to pin down the values of The Happy Journals, which you can see below. I did this by going through the process I've put together for you in the workbook you can grab below. I truly hope you find is as useful as I did.

The Happy Journals' Values

Achievement

Taking the time to celebrate all achievements - big or small - is ridiculously beneficial. Simply moving from one thing to another without taking the time to pat ourselves on the back can be draining. I have been in many situations where I have been blind to my achievements and, frankly, it was depressing. I felt like I was searching for something that I already had. This is precisely why The Happy Journals is passionate about celebrating achievement daily.

Bravery

Bravery is by no means the same as being fearless. Bravery is the ability to recognise that something scares you but going for it anyway. Used right, fear can be useful in driving you forward towards your goals. I have been terrified more times than I care to remember. But, I believe if you accept the fear it makes achieving a goal all the more satisfying.

Challenge

Life without challenges is a bit dull. We need to have challenges to feel excited and alive. Of course, there are different types of challenges. There are those we set ourselves because we want to grow and achieve. Then there are those challenges that are forced upon us by life. With the universe and everything getting in the way. The Happy Journals is a fan of both and sees all challenges as an opportunity to learn and develop.

Creativity

Contrary to popular belief, creativity is not saved for the few. Everyone can be creative and come to life from a unique perspective. We have all made up new games as kids and turned cardboard boxes into spaceships and cars. I had so much fun doing it, and I am pretty sure you did, too. The trouble is that many adults allow that creativity to slip away and never look for it again. What if we did look for it? The Happy Journals looks for it every day. It's amazing what can happen with a little bit of creativity.

Development

People develop continuously. We learn every day, and we experience new things all the time. But we don't always take notice of it. If we can take charge of our development and become mindful of what we are learning and experiencing, amazing things will happen.

Exploration

Staying curious and exploring our inner selves, and the world around us is a beautiful thing. Knowledge drives curiosity: the more we know, the more we will want to explore. The Happy Journals is driven by the desire to explore as much of life and the world as possible.

Gratitude

In a world of advertising and marketing, the desire to have more is enormous. But what about what we're already lucky enough to have. When you're out looking at brand new laptops, for example, your eight year old laptop, with its keys hanging off, may not seem like much. But take the time to appreciate what that laptop has done for you and how grateful you have been to have it (*ahem* yes, I need a new laptop).

Is it cold today? How grateful will you be for your duvet tonight?

Gratitude is a great addition to a set of personal values.

Happiness

The quest for happiness is seemingly never-ending. But, I would say that the majority of people are looking for happiness in the wrong places. The Happy Journals is dedicated to helping people find happiness from the inside out, rather than from outside sources. Happiness is a great personal value, but make sure you're looking in the right places.

Motivation

Different people are motivated by very different things. For some, money is the only motivation. For others (like me) helping people find happiness and comfort is their motivation. Finding your "why", your motivation is one of the most freeing and beneficial things a person can do.

Optimism

Remaining optimistic can prove tricky at times. Especially when everything feels like it is going wrong. Sometimes it can feel like there's no point in being positive because it doesn't get you anywhere. But these are the times when optimism is it's most valuable. Even something as simple as saying, "right I'm going through tough times at the moment but it will get better", can serve you greatly. If we think with optimism as soon as we wake up in the morning, our days will no doubt feel lighter and brighter.

Reflection

I am a huge advocate for journaling, both here at The Happy Journals and in every day life. Journaling opens the door for honest reflection. Within the pages of a journal, a person can let their stories flow. Doing so allows the reader to study life from a fresh new perspective. Through reflection, we can recognise how we feel: whether actions and outcomes are worthy of our attention.

Uniqueness

We also live in a world of comparison. At a click of a button, we can now see what the whole world is doing and how they are doing it. In an instant, it is possible to compare our lives with that of millions of others'. It is easy to feel jealousy or envy because others have what we do not. But I am passionate that everyone in this world should embrace their uniqueness. We need to love what we already have and work towards what we want. Comparing ourselves to others and feeling inferior because we think we have less, is little more than a waste of time.

Potential

I also believe that everyone has potential. Potential to be awesome. An "awesome life" means different things to different people. Whatever awesome means to you, I know you have the potential to live it. I set up The Happy Journals partly as a way to help people to work towards their potential. All you need is a little courage, belief, determination and grit.

Purpose

Everyone has something they are meant to do. Whether you believe in fate (or higher powers etc.) or not, we all have something we were born to do. Once you work out what that purpose is, life becomes a joy. Your purpose could be anything from building your own business to reading to sick children at weekends. I want to do some work to help you discover what your purpose is!

Learning

I adore learning, and I believe that every single day brings us lessons. More often than not, we do not notice these lessons. But you'll find that the same subtle things will keep happening until we see them. So, learn that lesson. The older we get, the wiser we become. But, it is up to us how we use that wisdom. A mistake or a failure should not signify the end or cause you to give up. Instead, we need to stop and learn. Then we can take that lesson and use us to move us forward with even more fabulous momentum than before.
