Visualisation for success is a handy tool. If you watch an Olympic swimming race, you will see many of the athletes staring down the pool before the start. They might look a bit vacant as they do this, but they are visualising every aspect of the race ahead. The start, the turn, their stroke speed, the finish. And, most importantly, their successful result.

As a swimmer for Great Britain, I used visualisation a lot in training. I'll be honest, I hated the training aspect of competitive swimming.

During particularly hard training sessions, I would visualise myself winning a gold medal. As soon as I did this, my training session got easier immediately. Even my coach could tell when I had done this.

There is an awful lot of talk about visualisation these days. I guess it may all sound a little confusing if you haven’t tried it before. The first things to know is that it is more than daydreaming. Also, it is different from meditation, and it is not a religious thing.

What is Visualisation For Success?

Visualisation is about picturing yourself in specific situations. This comes with the expectation that the visualised outcome will happen in real life. In other words, you concentrate on a goal you want to achieve, imagining yourself doing it. Visualisation can often increase awareness. It can also make you more able to recognise future opportunities.

There are a lot of scientists who suggest that the wiring in our brains works in a way that you become what you focus on. This explains why if we don't want to experience certain things we end up experiencing them. Sometimes we become so focused on what we don't want to happen that it ends up happening anyway. The act of visualisation takes advantage of this process. Turning it into something positive.

How Is Visualisation Used?

Realistically, you can use visualisation to achieve anything you wish. In general, though, it comes in handy for goal setting and life circumstances.

Relationships:

People use visualisation for picturing themselves in a successful marriage. Or meeting their soul mate, for example. It could be that you can visualise improving an existing relationship. Or achieving a more harmonious home life for your family.

Business:

A lot of business people attribute success to being able to visualise their progress. Using visualisation for success has been linked to increased income and greater self-confidence in business.

Self-Image:

You might find visualisation useful if you’re looking to improve your self-image. For example, you might imagine yourself as confident, competent, and worthy of success. Often these visions begin to play out in real life, which starts a cycle of increasing confidence.

How Do You use visualisation for success?

As I said earlier, there's a bit more to visualisation than daydreaming. When you use visualisation in the hopes of creating real-life changes, you need to be specific. Your visualisations need to be extremely focused towards particular goals.

Successful visualisations include specific smells, sounds, and feelings that surround the goal. Our brains blur the line between real life and something imagined. Which enhances the possibility of achieving the goal.
